Building in public is not a streak
2 min read
Building in public is good. It is also easy to fake.
You post when the build goes well. You go quiet when it does not. You delete an awkward update. You restart a Notion counter and call it day one again. Nobody who mattered saw the gap, so the story stays clean.
That is not a streak. That is selective storytelling.
Why soft BIP feels like progress
Loss aversion works both ways.
When the cost of missing is private, your brain protects the self-image: "I am still consistent. I just paused." Public timelines without enforcement reward the same move. Followers see the highlight reel. The miss never became evidence.
Commitment devices only work when the commitment is hard to undo. A tweet you can delete is not hard to undo. A private habit app is designed to forgive you.
So BIP can look like accountability while training the opposite habit: ship when safe, vanish when not.
What a real streak needs
Three things, none of them vibes:
- A visible calendar of shipped days and gaps.
- A limited forgiveness budget (one grace, not infinite soft resets).
- A fail state that stays (graveyard), so ending is not a secret.
Without (3), people optimize for never looking broken. With it, people optimize for showing up.
That is the psychology. Not motivation posters. Cost.
Unforgiving is the feature
ShipStreak is petty on purpose.
One grace. Miss again and the streak ends where people can open the link. No backlog. No backdating. Pause only if you freeze the window before the miss.
Failed runs sit in a public graveyard. Failed runs stay visible. That is the product, not a settings toggle.
If that sounds harsh, good. Soft tools already exist. They did not fix the quiet quit.
BIP still matters
Keep posting. Keep the audience. Keep the messy mid-build updates.
Just stop pretending a feed is a streak ledger.
Use BIP for narrative. Use a public streak for proof that you did not edit the tape.
Try the hard version
Feel the loop with no account: Try it.
Read the mechanics: ShipStreak rules.
Or skip the essay and start a free 7-day streak. No card. One grace. Then it can end in public.
